  1. jackfruit

    April 25, 2013 by admin

Above is a picture of a Jackfruit fruit. I used to eat this delicious and sweet tasting fruit back in Leyte. The Jackfruit (Langka in Filipino, Nangka in Visayan) tree grows abundant in my native Leyte. The fruit is not just good when ripe, it is also good even if not mature, for cooking. The cooking and preparing process is tedious as this is not just a prickly fruit, it has juice that resembles glue, but the end result is delicious and filling that nobody complains when one is asked to clean the fruit to get it ready for cooking. I have seen this fruit at the Asian store that I frequent but this is the first time I bought a slice. It was a good decision too because the fruit was so sweet. I made the husband taste it and he said it was delicious. He even made me save the seeds because he will try to put them in the ground to see if it will germinate. I might buy this again when available the next time I visit the Asian store. It is a bit pricey for just a slice but I think it is worth it.

  2. chicken wings in tomato sauce

    January 28, 2013 by admin

Chicken wings in tomato sauce. This is one recipe I learned to cook at a very young age, mostly from watching my grandmother cook for the whole family on special occasions. Normally, this recipe calls for more vegetables but since I am not normal (lol) you can only see the meat and a few carrots to go with it. I did saute garlic and onion before I put in the meat and carrots. The picture may look so plain without the necessary color and garnishing but I can assure you, this is one recipe that is good with rice and fried dried fish on the side. It makes the whole house smell heavenly too. The husband who is ever worried about my waistline asked me if I can eat it all which I replied on the affirmative. I did reassure him I will make it last a few days at least so he will not get horrified at how much his wife can eat. As if he doesn’t know, lol.

  3. a box full of chocolates

What does a girl do when she receives a box full of Majestic Assorted Chocolates from Asher’s? Share it with her husband, of course. It helps that the husband is a chocolate lover, we both enjoyed our free sample. Inside the box was a selection of rich milk and dark chocolate truffles, toffees, buttercreams, jellies, nuts and souffle’s. I like the fact that the box of chocolates came with a “guide”, a sheet of paper that contains pictures of the chocolates that were included in the box, complete with information about each piece. I find it very informative because I am not used to eating this kind of confections. I am a chocolate bar kind of girl so if you give me an assorted box I will not know what to expect. The husband knows what each shape of chocolate was for and what were inside and he told me but I still need to check to make sure, lol. Every bite was sinfully delicious, we end up wanting for more. We ate our share in no time. He said these were the best assorted chocolates he has had in a long time. I agree.

  4. ginataang gulay

Or tinunuan in my dialect. This is a combination of vegetables cooked in coconut milk. The meat used is normally either salted fish or fried fish. The fish is cooked separately before putting it in the same pot with the vegetables so it will not get mushy. This is another favorite. The soup is good on rice. This dish is better when somebody cooked it though. When all a person needs to do is sit in the table and eat his share. Either way, this is healthy and good for lunch or dinner. The vegetables I used in this dish are long beans, sweet potato top, okra, old fashioned squash, and I think a bit of lemon grass and ginger for spice. Of course, don’t forget the coconut milk.

  5. Perky Jerky: A Review

    October 15, 2012 by admin

My first thought when I read above words was, really? Let me tell you more. I received free samples from Perky Jerky a few weeks ago. The company sent me two packs each of beef and turkey jerky to review. When the husband saw the package and learned (I told him) what was in it, he wanted me to open it right away. We decided to try the beef jerky first. The smell when I opened the beef jerky pack was mouth watering. It reminded me of my grandmother’s marinade for some reason. I know for a fact that she did not use Guarana, which Perky Jerky claims they do use as one of the seven ingredients they use on their marinade, so I do not know why the smell was the same. I am not kidding on this one either. It actually made my mouth water. I think the beef jerky was good. It was tender, and it was cut in smaller sizes unlike the other brands I have tried which were whole slices of marinated meat. The taste was delicious albeit a bit salty for my taste. I could not claim having an energy boost though because I would not know it if it slaps me in the face. All I know is that I have never had beef jerky that good. The husband has a different opinion, however. He said he did not see or taste anything that separates Perky Jerky Ultra Premium Beef Jerky from other brands. This he said while munching on the delicious meat. I finished the rest of the bag wondering why I have not had this product before.

The unopened bags of jerky. It is a shame I forgot to take pictures of the meat.

A few days later, we tried the Perky Jerky Ultra Premium Turkey Jerky. I must tell you, this one did not smell like the beef jerky. It did not taste like it either. But then, it shouldn’t because these were two totally different meats. I like the turkey jerky but not as much as I like the beef jerky. The beef jerky won, hands down. What can I say, I like my beef. In all honesty, I am hooked. When I buy beef jerky I would love to have Perky Jerky, not because they gave me free samples but because they make good jerky. It is rare to find a jerky that is not tough to chew. Days after I finished the last pack, I was craving for more. Thankfully, I have found out that there is a store that carries the brand nearby. I might just pay them a visit soon. As it is with food products though, people have varied opinions when it comes to taste. So my opinion might just be a bit different than yours. It does not hurt to try, if only to disprove me. Why don’t you?
